The Power of Intention in Reiki

The Foundation of a Meaningful Reiki Practice

"When your intention is clear, so is the way."
— Alan Cohen

Reiki, like any energetic practice, deepens through experience and presence. The more we work with Reiki, the more naturally the energy flows and the more clearly we begin to understand its quiet intelligence. One of the most important ways to strengthen this connection is through daily self-practice. When we practice Reiki on ourselves regularly, we develop greater sensitivity, awareness, and trust in the energy we are working with.

But before we talk about building a Reiki practice or sharing Reiki with others, we must begin somewhere much deeper. We begin with intention.

A Reiki practice that grows from clear intention develops naturally and sustainably. Without intention, even the most beautiful spiritual practice can lose direction. Intention becomes the quiet compass that guides our work.

The Spiritual Foundation of Reiki

In Usui/Holy Fire® III Reiki, the practice is rooted in simplicity, compassion, and spiritual presence. Reiki practitioners understand that we are not forcing healing to occur. Instead, we allow universal life energy to flow through us as a clear and compassionate channel.

The Reiki practitioner’s role is not to control the outcome, but to hold space with integrity, humility, and loving presence.

One of the most powerful ways we support this process is through clear and sincere intention.

Part One: Intention

Reiki teacher Angie Webster explains that Reiki is often described as being “based in intention” and that “intention directs it.” She describes intentions as statements of purpose that guide the actions we take. Both our thoughts and our emotions are forms of energy. Each carries its own frequency.

The mind produces energy through thought. Throughout the day we experience thousands of thoughts, but most arise randomly and pass just as quickly. When we intentionally choose a thought, however, we begin directing that energy toward a specific purpose. The heart center produces energy through emotion. Emotions are not limited to the mind—they move through the body and are often felt most strongly in the heart space.

When thought and emotion come together with clarity and sincerity, they form intention. Intention is the meeting place between the mind and the heart. When these two energies work together, they create a focused current that supports healing and transformation.

Intention is the meeting place between the mind and the heart.

Intention Within a Reiki Session

When we work with clients, intention helps shape the energetic container of the session. Clients often arrive with specific needs. Some are seeking relaxation or emotional balance. Others may be navigating stress, grief, or physical discomfort. While Reiki practitioners do not control outcomes, we can hold a compassionate intention for the session and create a safe space where healing energy may flow.

A practitioner’s core intention may be simple: To serve as a clear channel for Reiki energy for the highest good. At the same time, we may also hold supportive intentions related to the client’s goals or concerns. For example, we may hold space for emotional calm, energetic balance, or inner clarity.

It is important to understand that Reiki practitioners often carry more than one intention into a session. Some intentions are long-term, guiding our overall practice, while others arise in response to the needs of the moment.

How Intention Directs Reiki

Working with intention in Reiki is often much simpler than people expect. First, bring your awareness to the person or situation toward which you would like Reiki to flow. Next, allow your mind to settle and let unnecessary thoughts fade into the background. Then bring your awareness to the heart center. Imagine directing feelings of compassion, gratitude, or loving presence toward the person receiving the Reiki energy.

When the focused clarity of the mind blends with the loving energy of the heart, the intention becomes energized. These two frequencies naturally merge and support the flow of Reiki where it is needed most. The process is subtle, yet powerful.

Reiki flows most clearly when the mind is calm and the heart is open.

Intention in Everyday Life

The principle of intention extends far beyond Reiki sessions. It influences many aspects of our lives. When the clarity of the mind and the sincerity of the heart move together, they influence the energetic patterns that surround us. They shape our choices, our relationships, and the environments we create around us.

Learning to work consciously with intention takes practice. Over time, however, it becomes an ongoing spiritual discipline—one that deepens our awareness and helps us bring greater kindness and clarity into the world.

Intentions may evolve as we grow. They can be refined, strengthened, or even changed over time. We may hold:

Long-term intentions for the direction of our Reiki practice
Session-based intentions for individual clients
Spontaneous intentions that arise in response to immediate needs

One important thing to remember is that intentions are not simply wishes. Once an intention is formed, it must be supported through thoughtful action.

Preparing to Set Your Intentions

Before beginning a Reiki session, it can be helpful to spend five to ten minutes preparing your energetic space. Find a quiet place where you will not be distracted. Allow your breathing to slow and your mind to become calm. You may wish to invite guidance—from your inner wisdom, spiritual teachers, or simply from the universal healing intelligence that Reiki represents.

Sit quietly and allow Reiki energy to gently fill your heart center. As you settle into this space, clarity often begins to arise naturally. When you sense the intention you would like to hold for the session, write it down. This simple act helps anchor the intention in your awareness. Carry that intention with you as you begin the session, allowing it to guide your presence and your work.

Continuing the Journey

Intention is the foundation upon which a Reiki practice is built. When our purpose is clear and aligned with compassion, humility, and service, our work unfolds naturally.
